We can’t buy an EV1 or RAV4-EV, but use of this picture of the EV1 (and the glimpse of the RAV4-EV) shows how the EV1 could have been used to help sell other cars. The new plug in conversions battery box and firmware shows how plug-in conversions must be done; the control system has to keep the battery less than full, so that it can opportunity-recharge when braking to a stop or going downhill. The “spoofing” board has to communicate with the Toyota on-board computer, so that it can’t determine that there are additional batteries; Toyota installed a routine that detects and defeats extra batteries, it has to be fooled.

An Electric Motor uses electrical energy to produce mechanical energy, very typically through the interaction of magnetic fields and current-carrying conductors. The reverse process, producing electrical energy from mechanical energy, is accomplished by a generator or dynamo. Many types of electric motors can be run as generators, and vice versa. For example a starter/generator for a gas turbine or traction motors used on vehicles often perform both tasks.
